Blessed Dominic Collins SJ

Blessed Dominic Collins was born in Youghal, Co. Cork in 1566. His family was one of the leading families in the town. Dominic left Ireland for France and had nine years in the military; he became a captain and a military Governor. He then went to Spain and met Fr. White, a Jesuit Priest who inspired Dominic to become a Jesuit brother. It was as a Jesuit brother that he returned to Ireland in the Battle of Kinsale. Dominic was captured by the English army and imprisoned. He was threatened, cajoled and offered treasures if he would renounce his faith. His family was brought to him to persuade him to renounce his faith and to go against his conscience; even to ‘pretend’ to do so. Dominic refused and on the 31st October 1602 he was executed in his home town of Youghal. An English officer who witnessed his death said; “He is going to his death as eagerly as I would go to a banquet.” Dominic, it is told replied; “For this cause I would be willing to die not once but a thousand deaths.” He was Beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1997 along with 16 other Irish Martyrs.

A Prayer to Blessed Dominic Collins SJ

Almighty and ever living God, you gave Blessed Dominic Collins grace to overcome the suffering of martyrdom which he endured for being true to his conscience. He bore witness to his family in times of trouble. Through his intercession hear the prayer we offer you in faith and give us the courage to bear witness to our families of faith in Christ and the strength to be true to our conscience. Let his prayer enable us to endure every trial for love of you and to make all haste on our way to you, in whom alone is life. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

Prayer for the Canonisation of Blessed Dominic Collins SJ

Lord God, your servant Dominic Collins, enlightened by your Word, Jesus Christ, our Lord, showed the proof of his love of you by remaining true to his conscience unto death. We pray that he may be numbered in your Church as one of your Saints. Through his intercession I ask you to grant my petitions ……………. if they be in accordance with your will. May your Church rejoice through the prayer of Blessed Dominic. This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen

Our Father……….   Hail Mary……    Glory Be …..

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
